The Norwegian government has decided to acquire the K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher system, manufactured in South Korea by Hanwha Aerospace, instead of the U.S.-made HIMARS system.

The information was shared by the Reuters news agency, citing the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten and official government sources.

The purchase is part of Norway’s move to implement long-range artillery to strengthen the country’s defenses and deter Russia in the Arctic, where the two nations share a border.

According to the Norwegian government, the Chunmoo missile meets all of Norway’s requirements, including a strike range of up to 500 kilometers, faster delivery times, and the ability to use multiple types of munitions.

The Norwegian Ministry of Defence plans to acquire 16 launchers, along with an unspecified number of missiles. The total value of the contract is estimated at around US$ 2 billion.

Some members of parliament suggested developing a European alternative, but the government rejected the proposal, considering it too costly and time-consuming.

It is worth emphasizing that Hanwha Aerospace already has an agreement with the Polish company WB Electronics to establish a joint venture for missile production in Poland, ensuring that part of the manufacturing will take place in Europe and simplifying logistics for NATO allies.
